Scalp detox

Scrubbing your scalp with fine granules may seem like an odd experience at first (wait, I thought this was just for your face?), but the truth is, scalp detoxes are more beneficial than you might think.

Our bodies shed thousands of skin cells per day. It’s part of a natural exfoliation process where we eliminate old, dead cells and make room for healthy, new ones on every inch of our skin, including the scalp.

Yet, it turns out- scalp health is often overlooked.

When we are suffering from a dry, itchy, flaky scalp, it’s only then that we tend to sweep into action. Product buildup, sweat, oil – all are inevitable and can lead to clogged hair follicles – this is seriously bad news for our hair quality. But don’t fret, a slew of detox products and DIY treatments are within reach to help your hair flourish again.

We’re here to break down the basics so that you can kickstart your routine ASAP.

What Is a Scalp Detox?

Similar to skin exfoliants, scalp detoxes cleanse the skin by removing impurities and excess buildup. It works to unclog pores by resurfacing the skin, making hair a lot healthier, shinier, and less prone to irritation.

Friction Is Key to Effectiveness

Regardless of its form (scrub/oil-based/mask), friction acts as a common denominator, a physical action that is essential to any detox treatment’s success. Think about it: friction disturbs the skin’s surface, making it a lot simpler for dead skin cells to lift off and pores to remain clean.

It’s not complicated to encourage friction: massage a bit of product into your scalp in gentle, circular motions. I like to work in sections, starting at the base of my head and work my way up to ensure I’ve covered all areas.

The Benefits?

In short, a lot.

– Stimulates hair growth

– Eliminates buildup

– Boosts shine capacity

– Moisturizes the scalp, keeping it hydrated

– Minimizes itchiness and flaking

– Prevents breakage

– Combats dandruff and other scalp conditions

An Easy DIY Scalp Detox Treatment You Can Make at Home

Scalp detoxes don’t need to be costly. I swear by the following treatment for all my itchy scalp problems.

– Mix 1-2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) with 1 cup of water

– Pour the mixture into a spray bottle

– Spray the solution onto your hair, working it into your scalp

– Rinse

I like to do this treatment once a week before I shower, but you may prefer doing it more/less often, depending on your hair needs.

PRÉIM TIP: To reduce ACV’s strong odor, add a few drops of essential oil to the solution, like peppermint (because it’s incredibly cooling on the scalp) or lavender (because it’s an instant de-stressor).

Or, Try an Oil-Based Version

It’s hard to believe that one ingredient is all it takes to create a DIY scalp treatment…but it is indeed true. Aside from the obvious, the oil will also work to condition and hydrate your strands, preventing future breakage.

– Use one of your favorite oils, like coconut or jojoba and deeply massage it into your scalp for 10-15 minutes

– Rinse

Scalp Detox Products We Love

Now onto the good stuff.

We’re obsessed with these products for many reasons. Loaded with hair-loving ingredients, they soothe the scalp, remove buildup and flakes – and simply get the job done.

Ouai Scalp & Body Scrub

This genius scrub is suitable for all hair types and acts as a 2-in-1, for maximum added benefit. Sugar crystals help to exfoliate the scalp and body while probiotics maintain your skin’s natural bacteria levels. The end result? You’re left feeling moisturized and nourished.

And let’s take a moment to discuss the scent …it’s Melrose Place, one of Ouai’s signature fragrances (and one of my personal favorites of all time). With hints of bergamot and white musk, to name a few, the scent is captivating, rich, but never overly powerful. It’s just pure bliss.

Ouai Detox Shampoo

I know what you’re thinking, it’s again from Ouai, but hear me out: the company keeps delivering powerful, highly effective products. If Scalp & Body Scrub is version 1.0, Detox Shampoo is 2.0 – the more robust one, ready to tackle the most irritating scalp issues.

If you need a thorough deep clean, Detox Shampoo is for you. Great for all hair types again, this shampoo does it all- eliminates dirt, buildup, impurities and heavy metals -thanks to star ingredients: ACV and chelating agents. Bonus: hair is left ever so soft and frizz-free due to the addition of hydrolyzed keratin. As for the scent? It’s the famous Melrose.

Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo

Award-winning Scalp Revival works wonders for those who suffer from a dry, flaky, irritated scalp. Micro-exfoliators gently remove buildup and dead skin cells, while binchotan charcoal pulls out impurities. But that’s not all. Briogeo brilliantly incorporates a trio of essential oils – spearmint, tea tree, and peppermint – to provide instant, soothing relief for your scalp.
